IN FAVOUR OF SOCIALISM.
WELLINGTON MAYOR'S OPINIONS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Monday. The Mayor of Wellington (the Hon. T. W. Hislop), who has shown a decided leaning towards socialism, took part in a public meeting on Sunday evening. In the course of an address, he said that it was from organisations for the discussion of social and political questions that intelligent public opinion -was generally evolved. The great movements that affected society did not originate with the politicians, who, as a rule, only followed the lead that was given by those outside political life. This was shown by the way in which the question of socialism was approached by both the political parties in New Zealand. As a matter of fact both the regular political parties in New Zealand had adopted the actual principles of socialism, and they only differed as to when those principles should lie applied and when they should not.
