In Tegard to a' report in a Southern paper concerning the peculiar condition of the potato market at present, and particularly in reference to the statement that " panic seems to prevail in the North Island, where heavy orders for forward delivery up to September have taken place at £5 10s f.0.b.," a Tost representative made inquiries of the several leading produce dealers in Wellington. The inquiry elicited the information that so far as Wellington was concerned there was no truth in the statement. The market, though inclined to dulness, was very steady. The present price—£s to £5 10s, according to quality—was considered very satisfactory by all concerned, from the grower to the consumer, and so far as could be judged values were not expected to go much beyond these figures this season. Only this morning a quotation from the South listed prime Derwents at £4 10s f.o.b. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S MARKET , • - CABLEGRAM. [BV TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. The . following is tlie High Commissioner's market cablegram, dated London, June 20;— The mutton market is quiet, and- trade is very disappointing, there being only a very hand-to-mouth demand. Canterbury brands are quoted at 4£d; North Island, 3id. The lamb market is very firm and a general active demand , exists for Canterbury at s|d ; other than Canterbury, s{d. The beef market is firm and supplies of American chilled are small and light. (Stocks of New Zealand brands are quoted as follows:—Hindquarters, 4d ; forequarters, 3d. The butter market is very firm.
