CHRISTCHURCH CANAL.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —KRESS ASSOCIATION.] CiiniSTcm/RCii, Tuesday. Mn. Ckokck !..\rj;:',xsoN", M.P., chairman. of the LytteHon Harbour Board, is of opinion that, even it' the Board decided in favour of the canal .-•heme, considerable difficulty would be experienced in getting the necessary legislation through Parliament-. He doubts. Jf 10 members could be got to support a Bill empowering the Board to construct a -liarbimv in Mich close proximity to such a. splendid natural haibour as Lyttelton. Further, lie is of opinion that the difficulty of getting the farming community from the Hurunui to the Ashburton rivers to agree to the extra rating that would be necessary is by no means one of the least that the supporters of the canal scheme would have to overcome. Meanwhile, opinion in the city appears to be hardening in favour of the canal, though the likelihood of anything-definite being clone in the matte lor a generation seems somewhat remote.
