EIGHTEEN MONTHS' RECORD

Ax article appealing in the Dominion, headed "A Striker's Paradise." gives, with particulars, a list of 17 strikes which have occurred in New Zealand during :<> little over 18 month?. Some of them were not strikes in the eye. of the law. either because no award was in force when the men ceased work or, in one instance, because the trouble came under another Act than the Arbitration Act. They were all strikes, however, in the sense that the men dropped their tools, and thus adopted forceful measures for the amelioration of their grievances, instead of resorting to the peaceful means of mutual discussion and agreement. The following is tin- list, with brief particulars in each case:—Auckland tramways strike, November 14. 1906: Wellington slaughtermen. February 12, 1907; Pareoia slaughtermen and assistants, February 15; employees of Gisborne Freezing Works and Nelson Bros., Cisborne, February 26 ; Invercargill slaughtermen, February 26; Belfast, Islington, and Fairfield slaughtermen, February 26; Burnside slaughtermen. March 4 : Pareora butchers, February, 1908; fellmongers' chamber hands, at Wanganui Freezing Works, February 22 and 26: Blackball miners. February 27; Wear Company's employees, at Petone, February 27; Pictoti. Freezing Works employees, March 6: Hastings bakers' carters, April 30; Green Island miners (under Coal Mines Act), May 15; Auckland tramway men, May 21; Blackwater miners, June 10; Wanganui tramway works labourers, June 11.
