Although for some time past the impression seems to have existed that business during the next month or two would show an appreciable shrinkage in volume, we are pleased to be able to record that up to the present this surmise has not been verified. A temporary shortage of ready money cannot lie looked upon as indicative of a depression in the wholesale distributing trade? generally, as this event, is a recurrent one at this particular season of the year, and, all tilings being considered, we look upon it in a measure as having a salutary effect on the commercial situation generally. Tn the meantime, the wholesale distributing merchants are kept busy; the period for forward bookings has now set in, and some good business is being put through on this basis. The hardware merchants are transacting a, satisfactory volume of business, and the soft goods warehouses are also experiencing a brisk demand for seasonable lines. The fancy goods houses are busily engaged in indenting for the Christmas trade, whilst the various industrial establishments are working good lime. Canned Fruits: As forecasted, quotations for the new pack of American have been, named, same being on a lower basis than has ruled for some seasons past, with the result that business has been done for forward shipment. .''■ Canned Salmon: Quotations for the new pack can shortly be expected, and in the meantime spot holdings are moving freely. ;l Carbide of Calcium: The forward position remains very firm, with an advance probable in the near future.

;| Prunes: Replenishing shipments tire awaited by s.s. Boveric. which is at present about 10 days off. ; ( Evaporated Apples: Spot stocks are nearly cleaned up, and early arrivals will come to a 'good market. For new fruit the price re'mains unchanged. - .'. Desiccated Cocoanut: Price is on a safe level . for operating, having touched, the lowest point for a good number of years. : Haricot; Beans: Local holdings are not heavy, and with brisk demand business has been put through in futures.

'»■ Sicily Almonds: Price for new fruit is 'firm, and we look for an advance before, long. ■ .'■' Jordan Almonds: Price for new crop can be expected any day. Old fruit is now very .pearly bought tip, and only small quantity is •held locally. ';;\, Sardines: Meeting with ready inquiry, kjvith forward position firm. % Candles: All brands arc being asked for freely, and the question of future price is giving some cause for discussion. Codfish: Prices for the new pack are slightly higher than la.st year. .Camphor: Opinion seems to be that price will have to move up. Dates: Forward market steady, with good inquiry for spot parcels. Kapok: We look for price to advance for what remains of the old crop. Whitehead: Market has eased slightly. Miklura Fruits: ..Sultanas have given every satisfaction, and larger quantities could have j: been placed if fruit Jiad been procurable. Potatoes: The Wanaka lias arrived with a cargo from the South, and the Munowai is due this morning. The market is now well supplied. There has been no alteration in price, and the demand keeps quite up to the usual. The present quotation is £6 ss, ex store.

Onions: Stocks held here are now running rather light. Canterbury is the only source of supply. Price remains at £9, ex store.

Oats: Tho Wanaka brings a cargo to a bare market. A considerable quantity of these have been sold direct from ship's side. Tho'position remains practically the same in the South. There has been no alteration in the quotations. Price locally, ex wharf, is 2s lid, and 3s Id ex store. The shipment of African oats per Connie Craig from Melbourne is costing more to clean than was anticipated, but the merchants can only get 4s 6d for them. Nov.- that they are cleaned they are very satisfactory. Fowl Wheat: If anything, the market is easier in the South, although there is not much offering. Price locally is 5$ 4d, ex store.

Barley: There is a good demand at 4s 6d, ex store. Stocks am on the light side. Peas: Prussian Blues are selling well at 6s 9d, with fair stocks, principally imported. No other kinds are wanted.

Maize: The Mangapapa brought 192 sacks from the 'Coast. The market is fairly well supplied, but. there are not likely to be any imports by the Sydney boat due on Sunday. We look for the market to steady itself. At present 5s 3d is wanted, ex store, for old, but new season's is difficult to quit unless in small lines tit a much lower price.

Chaff: Business is rather quiet, but the price has undergone no change, remaining at £6 15s to £7 for Southern. Arrivals from the South arc; now getting less, but stocks here are fairly good. There are only small offerings of local, which is worth £6 to £6 ss.

Bran : There has been no alteration in the price since our last, ami to-day's ([notation is £6 7s 6(1. Stocks are rather light, with a good demand.

Pollard: This is selling at £8 ex storo, with offerings on the small' side. Fungus is not coming forward freely. The market is firm <*il: sgd per 11). Flax : Deliveries continue very light. The London rararket show's that there is a tendency i here towards a further droo, but, as the offerings from here are so limited, prices have not been altered. Good fair may he nominally quoted at £22 f.a.q., at £20 10s to r £2l, and common at £18 to £19. Tow: Very little coming to hand; the demand not keen : price, £4- to £5. Indian Tea: The districts generally are still suffering from the drought, though light showers have fallen in a few places. Samples are arriving very slowly, and sufficient have not yet arrived to enable an opinion to be formed as to the quality of the first flush. The first sale of the season will be held at Calcutta to-day.

KAURI GUM. The arrivals for four days of .Tune reached 126 tons, and for the same period of June, 1907, 110 tons came' to hand, showing an increase of 16 tons so far for this month ; but the deficiency from January. 1 up to date is 1017 tons., as 2596 tons have reached here for 1908, as against 3613 tons for the same period of 1907. The market remains without any material change. There have been some small transactions in various grades, but low prices have to be accepted to induce business. Pale select is not selling so well: there is only a small stock on hand. Ordinary; There are still buyers for lines of good rescraped. Inferior parcels are not wanted. Superior thrcequarter-scraped ordinary is rather sluggish, there being very few operators, and weakish lines of this grade are extremely difficult to sell, the stock being rather heavy. Medium ordinary is not easy to dispose of, but, good washed nuts, if sieved, are moving/off slowly. Chalk with abit of heart in it has also been selling, and poor white swamp has been inquired for. East CoaM : Supplies »till keep on the light side. No sales have been effected for some little time-. , Black : There are buyers of good rescraped. Bold lumps, well-cleaned, have also been sold, but it ' looks as if orders have been completed. There is no briskness in the demand lor threequarter-scraped steel, of which then' is a plentiful supply. Medium blacks are selling slowly, and good hard black nuts

can be quitted if low prices are accepted. The demand for sugar is nil. Bush: A little rescraped is selling, but other grades are neglected. There is nothing doing in bled bush. Chips and Dust: Bright chips and dust are moving off. Good ordinary chips are not ii request. Digeers' ordinary chips and dust, if not of a muddy nature, can be sold. Black riddlingjs, black seeds, and coarse black dust, if indry. condition, are still salable. AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE. BUSINESS DONE YESTERDAY. Tuesday's closing sales. £ «. d. In the course, of an address delivered before a large meeting at the Liverpool Produce Exchange, (he Premier of South Australia stated that the exports of his State had increased from £5.700,000 in. 1904 to £9,000,000 last year, In which year 2605 ships left its ports. Dealing with South Australia's commercial relations with England, Mr. Price said that if the merchants of Liverpool would give them more for their produce than they were getting in London, they would send direct to Liverpool, and, moreover, they would smash up all the economics of the world by giving a bonus or subsidy to ships going to Liverpool. Some day they would understand it would be* better to give Australians some kind of a preference. Certainly it would come from their side, as they intended to offer to the British people a preference in trade matters.
