A DISASTROUS FIRE.
ENGINEERING WORKS BURNED LARGE XUMBEP RENDERED IDLE , By Telegraph.— Vrtes Association.—Copyrigijt. • Sydney, June 2. The Meadowbank Manufacturing Company's railway carriage and general engineering : works, on the banks of the Paramatta i River, were destroyed by lire at three ] o'clock this morning. [ The works, one of the largest in tho j State, covered three acres. Owing to their j distance from town tire appliances were not ; available in time to save anything, and the | whole of the works were.totally destroyed. The amount of loss is as yet unknown, but the damage in the carriage sheds alone is estimated at £30,000.* Three hundred and titty men have been rendered idle. (Keceived June 2, 10.30 p.m.) Sydney, June 2. The employees at- the Meadowbank works, and" a few volunteer firemen, assisted By a lucky change of wind, succeeded in checking the fire after the main buildings had been consumed. Besides valuable machinery and heavy slocks of j material the property destroyed included i eight lavatory carriages, three tramways, and a number of unfinished carriages, portions of big contracts that the company had in hand.
