THE GREAT NORTHERN MEETING.

Of the horses wlosc names figure on the card for the big crosscountry race Mahoe, it may be remarked, is the only one with a maiden status in the ; steeplechase department. The son of Sou'- . wester negotiated the . course in safety on Monday, but travelling one circuit of the ' course is a very different thing to the three which the actual race calls for. The followi ing; list of the principal winning performances registered by horses who claim a Great . INTKRPKOVINCIAL ( ÜbSSI I'. [BUT Ti:r.KCHAPff,—OWN" CORItI'.SI'OXTiK.STS. CAXTEKHUHY. Tuesday. 1 learn from a source which can be thoroughly relied on that the whole of (lie horses in the estate of the late Mr. (J. (1. Stead are to he disposed of at auction during the Grand National week it) August. It docs not necessarily follow that none of .Mr. Stead's sons will go into racing, but. the stud and racing stables are probably too large for anything they would do. 1 understand (hat there are over 70 head of stock of varying ages, and the stile, when ii. takes place, will he one of the most important, ever held in Now; Zealand. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club Mr. Urigg suggested that the incoming committee should take into consideration the. advisableness of establishing I a weight-for-age race of not less than a i mile in connection with the November meetI ing. The "proposal is to call the race the i Stead Stakes, the object being to perpetuate the memory of the deceased sportsman. From his later remarks it appeared that Mr. Grieg intended the race to replace the Jubilee -Cup. The principle of naming a race alter Mr. Stead seems an excellent one, but 1 would have thought more of the proposal if it had been in the direction of establishing a new race altogethera weight-for-age contest without penalties or allowances over a mile or a mile and a-uuarter. \V ANG AN UI. Tuesday. Mr. Charles Lee lias disposed of General Peel. The Linstock Helen gelding has greatly benefited by his spell, and will shortly be put in training with a view to competing in hurdle events later on. Without doubt the best jumper at the "Wnußanui meeting was Mooshen. The aged Lakoshell gelding never touched a jump, and Ids display of fencing was heartily applauded. The brown gelding, which is trained by S. Brereton,,is likely to be heard of during" the present steeplechase season. THE NEW ZEALAND CUP. [BV TELEGRAPH.—PRF.S3 ASSOCIATION,] RlsTi'Ht'. Tuesday.
