CHIEF HCHIEF HEALTH OFFICER.

CONFERENCE WITH THE MAORIS. Dit. Mason, chief hclath officer, accompanied by Dr. I'omarc, native health officer, arrived in Auckland yesterday on Departmental business. During the day Dr. Mason met a number of local business men who are interested in the new Pure Food ami Drugs Act, and talked over the regulations o (the Act, with them. Dr. Mason remarked to a representative of the Hkr.m.d last evening that he A\a« very glad to say that the business men referred to expressed the greatest admiration for the Act, and indicated satisfaction at its having been passed. They were all willing to fall in with the new regulations, and preserve the Act in its entirety. It was pointed out that there were not a, groat many adulterated articles in the- Dominion, and these had been manufactured to meet tho public demand for cheapness and quantity, irrespective of quality. Honest manufacturers had to enter into this kind of competition or lose the trade, and consequently they welcomed the Act. Dr. Mason stated that the Karere camp, for patients recovering from consumption, was now in full swing. The eight men at present there were in'good health, and in pursuance of the plan for employing patients at the home, these men were now engaged in tree planting, which was not too laborious an occupation for them. Accompanied by Dr. Pomare, Dr. Mason will leave Auckland to-day or to-morrow fcr the- Waikato, and will subsequently go on to Rotorua, Tarawera, and Napier.* The object of the visits is to meet the natives of these districts with regard to matters of improved sanitary conditions, and the prevention of consumption among the natives. This is in pursuance oi the Government scheme lor improving the-health conditions of the natives by getting them to co-oper-ate with the Health Department to this end. Several big meetings of natives have been arranged to meet Dr. Mason and Dr. Pomare in conference, and Dr. Rangihiroa will also take part in the proceedings. «
