"TATTERSALL'S" SWEEPS.

CAN THEY BE STOPPED. A rigorous Gaming; and Lotteries Act and a, special amendment of the Post Office Act have apparently failed to materially interfere with that popular form of gambling— Tattersall's sweeps. Recently (says a Wellington paper) a New Zealander won a large sum through a Tattersall gamble, but he should, in theory, at any rate, have never been able to get a ticket without personally going outside the Dominion to purchase it. A letter addressed' to Tafcfceraall's, -Tasmania, | is "held up" at once by the Post Office authorities, and -a postal order cannot be made out to the sweepstake promoters, yet the business goes merrily on, in a less ostentatious way, it is true, but with volume very little less than before the restrictive legislation was passed. ;An inquiry into the methods of continuing Tattersall business under these difficult circumstances demonstrates the futility of Carrying restrictive legislation beyond a, point at which it will be backed up by the force of public opinion. " I don't sell Tattersall's tickets, but I put my customers-on to so-and-so," explained a tobacconist. "Where do you get your 'sweep' tickets?" he asked a customer -who happened to come in at the moment. It was quite a chance shot, but it hit the mark. "At —." It seems that tickets are regularly purchased through the medium of agents in the Dominion, and that there arc- private firms, in Tasmania who receive remittances for Tattersall's. Patrons of the sweepstake buy postal notes of the kind payable only in New Zealand, but these are accepted by Tattersall's agents, and returned to New Zealand through a bank for collection. "Discussing the position with the Commissioner of Police (Mr. W. Dinnie), the reporter ascertained that the police force is actively-. the lookout for illegal sales of sweepstake tickets, but that great difficulty is experienced ■; in getting satisfactory and conclusive evidence on the subject. .
