CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB, [IIY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] CmusTCitUßCir, Thursday. At..the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club' this afternoon the chairman (Mr. F. H. Pyue) said that £26.780 had been given in stakes during the season, a marked, increase over the. previous season. The profit was £4921 6s 4d, as against £5313 8s lid in 1907 (Exhibition year). The tctalisator had not been seriously affected by.the licensing of- bookmakers. A matter which deserved the attention of the Racing Conference was the large number of short, races of from five to six furlongs which now appeared.on many programmes. The excuse was. of course, that short races filled as well and paid as well, but he thought if it were compulsory to have less of those short scrambles." in which the element of luck so largely entered, and in which there was very often foul riding, owners would train their horses, to gallop further, and if the distances were longer the entries would be'just as large. The chairman also made reference to the" death during the past year of Mr. Geo. O. Stead. Mr. G. E. Calculi. Mr. J. W. Sinclair, Mr. E. M. Turrell, and Mr. Cecil Louisson. ' ■ A motion was carried recommending the incoming committee to put on a mile weight-for-age race at the November meeting as a memorial to Hie. kite Mr. Stead.
