The Melbourne Argus of May 18 says :— " Opinions as to the identity of a smart-looking barque which entered Port Phillip Heads on the tide before daylight on Saturday were all astray, for she turned out to be the Louisa Craig, always a popular visitor, under sail to Melbourne. Captain Kennedy had an unusually stormy trip to report since leaving Kaipara on April 24 and sighting the Howe. 'Gales became our portion,' said the captain, ' and it was an hourly battle. The wind's direction veered from west-north-west < to west-south-west, and we got a dusting. Yet we did not lose any ol our 533,000 super, feet of . timber, and I feel grateful that all is -well. On the 9th Inst, we sighted the Selwyn Craig of! the Howe, but though we knew her well enough her signals could not be made out. Though the weather was so bad no trace of any wreckage or •/ >■ other signs of recent disaster could be detected.' " The Louise. Craig is loading produce at Mel- .. bourne for Auckland. The Selwyn Craig arrived at Melbourne on May 19. • • THE MATATUA. S. Winship being the refrigerating engineers. Tim Matatua has 4400 tons of general cargo and 150 ton* of explosives for Auckland. The latter will be put out to-day into the lighters, and the steamer will berth at the Queen-street Wharf in the afternoon. -Of the voyage the second Officer reports The Matatua left the Royal Albert Dock, London., oil April 10, having on board a general cargo for the ports of Auckland. Wellington, and Timani. Fine weather and variable moderate bree7.es were experienced to Santa. Cruz, Tcneriffr, which port was signalled at 9 a.m. on April 16, and until the steamer crowed the equator on April 22 the weather continued fine and clear, with the usual moderate north-east- trade winds The south-east trade winds commenced •fresh ajid culminated within three days' steaming of Capetown to-a strong gale, with a heavy head sea, and swell. The vessel shipped sea* considerably, and her progress was impeded greatly throughout. At 7 p.m. on May 4 Capetown was passed, and after rounding the Cape of Good Hope the weather moderated and became fine mid clear, with gentle westerly breezes. Oil crossing the meridians of the Crozet and Kergunlen Islands foggy weather was experienced, and owing to the usual appearance of ice in this region moderate speed v.as maintained at intervals when the fog set in thick. As the vessel proceeded further irto the Southern Ocean the weather cleared, but strong northerly gales continued, with heavy seas running, causing the vea«el to labour heavily and make very bad weather of it. From Cape Leeu\>iu to the Tasman .Sea a strong persistent northerly gale was encountered, which, on Hearing Tasmania, became a furious gale, with a tremendous high sea. The vessel shipped large quantities of water, being greatly impeded in her daily progress, and as the weather continued thick Tasmania had to be given a wide berth. For the remainder of the passage to Auckland clear weather was experienced, the vessel arriving at the powder ground at 3.45 p.m. vesterdav. Messrs. A. S. I'aterson and Co. are the local" agents for the steamer, which proceeds South oil discharge. THE WAIKARE. The Union Company's steamer Waikare. left fiisborne fo.
