THEFT OF CIGARETTES.

[JIV TELEGRAPH. —PKKSS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Friday. At the Hastings Police, Court this morning a lad was charged with stealing 1000 cigarettes, the property of Charles H. Hawkins. Defendant pleaded guilty to talcing 200 cigarettes, but said he had no knowledge of the rest. From the evidence of J. H. Kdmundsoti, manager of Mr. Hawkins' motor garage, it appeared that the firm imported 20,000 cigarettes in March. A thousand cigarettes were missed, and two boxes were found in defendant's possession. The. police staled that defendant had a key that titled the lock of the compartment where the cigarettes were stored. Mr. Fdmundson. for Mr. Hawkins, said he had no desire to press the charge, and he asked that defendant be dealt with leniently. < The justices inflicted a fine of £2, or, in default, one month's imprisonment.
