PANTOMIME PIGS.
A PROMISING t INDUSTRY. Tub " silly sTfeep," with only wisdom enough to fatten itself for the butcher's knife, has had a long innings on the New Zealand pitch, and now has come the time for the pig to take a turn—the pig intelligent enough lo take part in a pantomime. Here is good tidings for the man on the land. A Wellington paper states that a live hog was wanted for a pantomime. A porker was sent down from Johnsonvilie, but proved unsuitable, and a " sucker" was substituted. This is what the owner of the animal wrote when he sent in his account :— To cartage one porker half-way to Johnsonville station ... 0 5 0 Johnsonville to Wellington, per rail... 0 3 0 Cartage from W. Manawatu Station to Opera House .. 5 0 2 6 Cartage on returned pig, being unsuitable, to Johnsonvilie 0 7 6 Cartage second pig, Johnsonvilie to Opera House ... 0 7 6 Return from Opera House to Johnsonville ... — 0 7 6 To hire of pig for period 1 10 0 Nett £3 3 0 The "nett" is the term of the owner. The period during which, the little swine was maintained in luxury at the Opera House was a fortnight, and the company was asked to pay 15a a week to the lodger or his representative. A similar sucker could have been bought hoi us bolus for about 10s.
