THE CHESS CONGRESS.

PLAY IN WELLINGTON. [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. The Chess Congress under the auspices of the New Zealand Chess Association commenced in Wellington t«-d*y. The proceedings were formally opened by the Mayor (the Hon. T. W." Hislop). Following are the particulars of the play, the umpires being Messrs. A, F. LifUejohn and A. G. Fell. The competitor mentioned first in each case played white, and took first move.: — It. <J. Barnes (Wellington Working Men's Club)" v. A. W. 0. Davits (Wellington Chess Club); Barnes resigned on the 34th nuve, mate in three moves being unavoidable. S. A. Council (Wciiroa Chess Club) v. M. S. Stewart (Canterbury Chess Club): This game resulted in a draw on the 19thmove. Conned seemed to have the advantage ac one period, but upon analysis it proved to be a draw position. H. James (Wellington Chess Club) v. F. K. Kelling (Wellington Chess Club): The latter compelled iis opponent's resignation on the '18th move? This was an interesting Civil Service battle, for Mr. James is on the staff of the Parliamentary Library and Mr. Kelling is in the Government Insurance Department. B. Mason (Auckland) v. Freeman (Auckland) : The opening of Queen's Gambit was declined. »The defence was on irregular lines, but a weak eighth move allowed Mason to win a pawn and secure a, strong attack". Freeman was lire pawns to the bud on the 24th move, and he could not retrieve the position, resigning on the 51st move. Rummer (Mastertou) v. 11 Rutherford (Wanganui): The former, though greatly pressed for time, forced a rather decisive win on the 30th move.

The Rev. A. Fox (Tinwald, Canterbury) was awarded a live.
