FIRE DRILL AT SCHOOL.
CHRISTCHURCH DEMONSTRATION. [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, Friday/ Captain" Hannah, Government fire inspector, of public buildings, yesterday visited the East Christchurch school, which' has a roll number of about 1100, for the purpose of witnessing demonstrations of fire drill. At the first demonstration over 500 children in the main school were marched out through one exit in 2m. 205., and at the second, through two exits, in lm. 325. The third demonstration was at the infant school, where over 400 children marched out in 50s. The main school is a double-storeyed structure, and Captain Hannah found, on making an inspection of the building afterwards, that two stairways leading from the main corridor upstairs were so winding that in case of a panic a terrible disaster must occur. He also found that all the classroom dqsas opened, inward instead of outward. The chairman of the committee, who was present at the demonstration, was urged to have these defects removed without delay, and he promised that the ■matter would be attended to at the following meeting of the School Committee.
