TRADE WITH CANADA.
' DISCUSSION AT DUNEDIN. "•.-••■. [Ny TKLEGRAI-n.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ;/-■/ .;- . ; Ounedin, Friday. At the conclusion of an address given before the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce by Mr. J. S. Larke, the Canadian "' /Government's Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, an interesting ■ - discussion took place showing that attempts have been already made by individual Dunedin firms to open up trading relations with Canada. The Mayor of Dunedin (Mr. London), in A moving a vote of thanks to Mr. Larke. ' suggested that New Zealand might open * up a wool market in Canada and do business direct, instead of through the London wool market. Mr. J. Roberts, jun., of Murray, Roberts and Co., replied that he went through Canada a few years ago with that very object in view, but he was informed by a ."large woollen manufacturer in Montreal PfffA that they could buy all the wool for their \requarements locally, as the annual production of wool in Canada and the United States amounted to 300,000,0001b. The Canadian wool merchants also insisted on T ' having a guarantee on all wool purchased in New Zealand, their attitude being due to want of local knowledge of trade conditions. Mr. Larke mentioned that at a knitting factory in the Canadian town he came from the manager showed him some sliped wool from New Zealand that they were using, - which was purchased in London. . ' Before the meeting broke up the chairman (Mr. W. Gcw) notified that the committee of the Chamber would draft a resolution affirming the desirableness of securing some of the things advocated by Mr. Larke, including cheaper cable rates ".■■■■und improved steamer services.
