THE CAPSIZED STEAMER.
OPENING OF THE INQUIRY. DISASTER STILL UNEXPLAINED. Br Telegraph.— Association.— Sydney, April 16. The inquiry into the loss of the Illaw&rra Steam Navigation Company's Bega, which capsized or.d sank off the south coast, has been opened. ■ " A passenger stated that the steamer had a list when she left the wharf at Tathra. One of the boats was very leaky, and the 1 only baler was a boot. Great difficulty ■was es-ivsrionced in keening the vessel afloat. Another passenger deposed to 'icing handed a knife by a sailor, and asked to cut the painter by which the women's boat was being towed. Other evidence showed t l »* » e Bega was carrying less cargo than usual, and that it was well stowed.
