MEETINGS.

NEWTON SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Newton Schools' Committee was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present: Messrs. C. H. Sexton (chairman), J. M. White, "W. S. Smith, H. Schofield, R. James, G. E. Road, C. Waddingham, W. J. Holdsworth, and E. Healy. A deputation of householders from Richmond, representing the new Grey Lynn school district, waited upon the committee to lay before thorn their views respecting the proposed new school site. Messrs. A. Creamer, C. Norgrove. and Brown addressed the committee, strongly urging the need for a new school in the present populated locality, and objecting to the Board's site in Greenwood' Avenue. After the deputation had retired, the committee, on the motion of Mr. 11. Schofield, passed the following resolution:—"That this committee, having heard the deputation from the Grey Lynn school district upon the need for a new school, and tho question of site for the same, would strongly urge the Board of Education to purchase a site and .erect a school within the present populated area. We would respectfully point out to the Board that, in our opinion, this extensive and growing district will carry a large population, and the Board's site will also be required in the future, but is entirely unsuitable for present requirements." The headmaster of the Newton East school reported that thero were 895 scholars on the roll, with an average attendance of 810. Various matters in the report were referred to the sub-committee with power to act. The headmaster of tho Newton West school reported the number of pupils on his roll to be 789, with an average of 720. The Grey Lynn school headmaster reported 206 pupils and an average of 173, and that another assistant was now required for this school. The accounts passed for payment amounted to £15 ss. The report prepared for tho householders' meeting was read and approved. This being the last meeting of the committee, a hearty vote of thanks was presented to the chairman for his services, and also to Mr. W. 8. Smith, who is not standing for re-election. SAILORS' HOME COUNCIL. A meeting oi the Auckland Sailors' Homo Council was held on Thursday evening, the president (Mr. P. J. Nerheny) occupying the chair. Tho House and Finance Committee's report, which was adopted, recommended that the action taken in lending £1000 on mortgage of Hobson-street property, at 51 per cent., for three years, be confirmed.
