The trouble between the coastal shipping companies and the Wharf Labourers' Union continues. When the conference broke up to-night, after a lengthy sitting, Mr. Hughes announced that the companies bad rejected the terms submitted by the unionists, and the struggle would continue. , , ; On behalf of the companies the statement was made that the only point they are tight-, ing for is freedom of contract, and this not only in their own interests, but in the interests of employers of labour throughout Australia. Many rumours are current as to the probable development and extension of the strike, and the position is considered critical. Both sides are reticent. During the day the Employers' Federation meeting reaffirmed its intention to preserve the right of. private contract in regard to the employment of free labour. Thirty-five steamers are laid up as the result of the strike.
