THE SYMONDS-STREET CEMETERIES.
Sir,—l beg to. submit to the Major and councillors of our city that the time 'has' now arrived when no more burials should bo' permitted in these cemeteries. Some years » ago thev were closed provisionally** " No new ' ground may be owned, but the blood re la- [ tions in tin* first degree of consanguinity ! of those buried there have the right of in-i terment, 1 think that, in the interest of the public health, it is full time that His Worship and the Council took the steps necessary for the absolute stoppage of burials in the, heart of the city. In the early days* there was a cemeCsry iti what afterwards became the heart of Sydney. About 40 years ago the Mayor and councillors took steps neces-: sary for the absolute closing of that cemetery. A large monument was erected, on which were inscribed the names, as far a* ascertainable, of those who had been buried' there. All fences, gravestones, etc., were removed, and the land was turned into a park, which added to. instead of detracting from, the health of the city. I would suggest that a similar course should be followed ncre. William Rattray.
