WOMEN'S POLITICAL LEAGUE.
A meeting of the Women's Political League was held on Thursday afternoon in the Pitt-street schoolroom, -Mr?. Kirkby presiding. A discussion took place on woman suffrage in the United Kingdom, mucli pleasure being expressed that so many members of the Cabinet, affirmed the principle bv voting for the second reading of Air. Dickinson's Bill, while it was considered regrettable that the " men of Devon had so far forgotten their manhood as to Handle women roughly and maltreat them at the Mid-Devon election. The following Resolutions were carried: — ! '•That this meeting endorses the/phiioii expressed bv Judge Kettle in »'\JiJt in \ ca f. of infantile' neglect, that the fftHJer should !>•> held equally responsible for tin), welfare of the child, and share an* bl.-fme attached to the mother.''
•■That a letter be sent to Sub-Inspector Gordon, thanking him for his investigation in regard to women and drink; also, that the time has now arrived when legislation should be brought to bear on tin.-, matter, ami neither men nor women be allowed to sic drinking in a public house."
"That the attention of the Minister for Justice be drawn to the sentences recently passed at the Supreme Court on two boys of 14, of six months and two years respectively, both with hard labour. That, while no woman would wish to condone their offence, this meeting begs that, the Ministei wiil take into consideration their yqlith, and send them to a reformatory, instead of a prison, 'where they will be made criminals for life, also that he will inquire into the disparity between the two sentences."
