A telegram has been received locally from a well-known Timaru miller to the effect that the wheat market there was very excited yesterday, large sales being effected in sympathy with the London market. FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Business on the local fruit and produce markets lias been fairly good during' the past week, although supplies in some instances, were very light. Shipments of imported potatoes, contrary to expectations, being on the small side, the market, was left bare, with the result that, all samples, including very inferior and badly packed local lots, were quitted at extreme rates. Onions were in supply about equal* to the demand. Chaff was very firm, but supplies were not in excess of requirements, Vegetables were again very scarce and realised high prices. In dairy produce very little farmers' make of butter wan sent in, and all of the best lots touched close on factory quotations. Owing to the extremely hot weather prevailing some of the small lots were in a very unpresentable condition. Fresh eggs came forward in large quantities, and prices dropped considerably on late quotations. Bacon and hams were in such short supply that it was impossible to complete orders. What fanners' cheese was sent in was of inferior quality. There was no change in values for factory make. Steady supplies of fruit came" to hand during the. week, and all sold under unusually keen competition and generally extreme rates ruled. The first shipment, of grapes from South Australia was lauded on Monday, but in an unsatisfactory condition. A second shipment is due on Monday next, and it will be interesting to see in what condition they are. If they are not in better order than the" first shipment the prospects for the shippers getting anything like; an adequate return for their labour is very poor. A fair quantity of New South Wales grapes were also landed on Monday, and generally in good condition. Local indoor grapes were more plentiful and sold at satisfactory rates, and the supply of outdoor varieties was heavy. Poultry came to hand in moderate numbers, and the quality was generally better than of late, consequently higher prices were obtained.
