BRITISH BY - ELECTION.

GAIN FOR UNIONISTS.

By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright.

London, March 4. The by-election for Hastings, owing to the resignation of Mr. Harvey Du Cros, resulted in the return of Mr. Arthur Du Cros, son of the retiringmember, and, like him, a Unionist. Mr. Du Cros polled 4495 votes, while Mr. R. Vernon Harcourt, the Liberal candidate, received 3477.

Mr. Du Cros attributes his victory to his attitude on tariff reform, and particularly colonial preference.

The majority for Sir. Du Cros, sen., at the last election was 413, as against the present Unionist majority of 1018.
