SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL STUDENTS. '

PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. Che .presentation of the certificates of the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of •Music and the Royal College of Music which were gained by Auckland candidates at last year's examination were presented by -the Mayoress (Mrs. A. M. Myers) at a largely attended gathering at St. Andrew's Hall last evening. The Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers) presided, and on the arrival of the Mayoress she was presented with a handsome bouquet by- Miss Dorothy Eduiiston. The Mayor, in his opening address, referred to the increasing attention given to musical matters in the Dominion, and after giving a short account of the history of the Associated Board, said that the high value placed upon the Board s examiners was reflected in the increase in the number of entries. In 1898 there were 12C entries from New Zealand. Auckland supplying 27. Last year there wore 1653 in New Zealand, and of these 202 came from Auckland. (Applause.) ' This indicated the great confidence placed by the musical profession in the system of examinations conducted by Ihe Associated Hoard. It was a curious fact that there had always been fewer entries for singing in all grades from Auckland than from any of the other large centres. flic Mayor also (as reported elsewhere) •ef.'erred to other'matters concerning musical summations. The certificates were then presented by th« Mayoress, and the remainder of the evening devoted to a musical programme, in which the following took part: —Misses Madoleine Webb, L.A.8., Gertrude Spooner, Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Nicol, Asmodeo, Dorothy Cardno, Vera Henderson, L.A.8., and Annie Dawson, and Master Willie Bucklev.
