TWELVE MONTHS IN 'GAOL.' [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GisitOßNK, Wednesday. Hake Matenga, the Maori who for several years defied pursuit by th* police in the, backwoods, was before the Supreme Court to-day charged with theft from a bush camp. Counsel for the defence raised the question of sanity, and called the prisoner, who related a story of bis adventures. Matenga said the primary reason why he took to the bush was " about a horse," and he was afraid that if caught he would be shot. On many occasions he heard shots in the bush, and thought people were after him. He took the gun from the camp because ho had been fired at with it. Matenga was convicted and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment.
