SWIMMING.
Y.M.C.A. CLUB. Entries for the swimming carnival of the Y.M.C.A. Club, which will be held in the Albert-street baths on Tuesday evening next, close with! the secretary at the Y.M.C.A. Rooms this evening. The full programme was advertised in the Heeald yesterday. -* ""* ;.-■■■'..• i.i Mason, of the Melbourne Club, who was recently defeated by Beaurepaire, put up a fine performance at the Abbotsford (Victoria) carnival recently. He won the 220 yd» championship, doing the course in 2m. 42is. The time was 7 4-s*. inside the Victorian standard. Mason is the first Victorian swimmer to break the standard.. la view of the centre's decision to hold a breast stroke championship, it may be advisable to quote the N.Z.A.S.A.'a definition of breast stroke:—" A competitor must swim on the surface of the water on his breast, both hands being pushed straight forward from the centre of the chest, and brought round to the starting point, shoulders being kept square to the body, the kick of the legs to be 'frog style.' - Swimming with face turned sideways is not allowed." Tho study and practice of life-saving is progressing favourably in Wellington. This is a very important work, and it is hoped that considerable progress will be- made before the end of the season in the methods of handling a drowning man properly. R. Nelson, of the Thorndon Club, is becoming quite expert, at rescue work, and can bring his " drowning'' man along in excellent style. Water polo is becoming very much the thing in Wellington baths just now. A regular tournament has been started, teams having entered from four clubs. '
