NATIVE TOWNSHIPS.
Sir, Your able leader sympathising with those who hold leases in Te Kuiii and other King Country townships has my entire approval. Maori landlordism has always been obnoxious to me, and in this instance doubly so, when I know that white men are sso heavily handicapped in endeavouring to keep the towns in which they reside respectable in appearance, all at their own outlay, and eventually for the benefit of the Maori landlord; .and not only this, but at the end of tenant's short lease additional taxation will be forced upon him as the inevitable result of said improvements. The only remedy for this very unsatisfactory state of things is for the Government to step in, as suggest ed by others, and purchase freehold from owners. Of course, it would have been infinitely wiser iq have dono this some few years back when terms could have been more easily arranged; but even now it
