MATRICULATION AND SCHOLARSHIPS.

The .additional examination • rendered necessary by the destruction by the Wellington fire of all the answers to matriculation and national scholarship papers set on Monday and Tuesday, December 9 and 10, will take place-on Thursday and Friday, January 23 and 24. In order to interfere as little as possible with candidates' holidays, the University authorities will allow candidates to sit ■ for the supplementary examination at the nearest centre, instead of in Wellington. There are 114 scholarship and 185 matriculation candidates Who have to sit again, and the new arrangement will in some degree compensate for an interference with their holidays which was at first the subject of protest. The supplemetary examination could not take place earlier owing to the senior Civil Service and teachers' certificate examinations occurring during the greater portion of the month. With regard to results they cannot be expected this year in connection with matriculation and scholarships until a fortnight or three weeks after the supplementary examinations. Matriculation results which are not subject to the additional examination will probably be available on January 23.
