GREAT FIRE IN NEW YORK.
SKY-SCRAPER DESTROYED.
THREE FIREMEN KILLED.
By Telegraph.—Prtsa Association.—Copyright New York, January 12. A thirteen storey sky-server known as Parker's Buildings, fronting Fifth Avenue and Nineteenthstreet, New York, has been destroyed by fire. The building was ablaze for 14: hours. The collapse of walk- and floors at different points caused the death of three firemen, while no less than 25 were injured, some seriously. The fire was confined to the building in which it originated, but the damage done was estimated at £300,000. *, The members of the brigade were handicapped in their efforts to save the building by the rotten state of their hose, which continually burst and became useless, and by the inadequate water pressure. ' :■ " The Fire Underwriters' Association recently * lodged a complaint with the civic authorities that half the Fire Department's hose was useless and should be condemned. The report was not acted upon, however, with the disastrous result of loss of life and property in the present out- ' break.
