When it was decided to re-build San Francisco after the disastrous earthquake and fire a large number of Australian and New Zealand workmen proceeded to that city with a view to securing employment there at a high rate of remuneration. Many, however, were doomed to disappointment, and before they had been there for many months found that they would have been much better off had they remained at home. Some 50 or 60 of the disappointed ones returned by the Manapouri on Wednesday, having travelled by the Mariposa to Tahiti, and then come on to Auckland. They atate that the big contractors refused to tray the wages demanded by the men, and field back their work in the belief that cheaper rates would prevail later on. Several valuable farms and freehold properties at Onehunga will bo submitted at Mr. T.
