Importations of Chinese and Japanese shoes are likely to be a thing of the past (says the Dunedin Star), as the new duties, which came into operation on October 31, will assuredly prohibit any such importations. A case has come under our notice where a local firm of importers had to pay duty amounting to £5 on a shipment of Japanese shoos valued at £1. The new tariff provided for tl» payment on the shipment referred to of a duty of Is 6d per pair and 15 per cent, ad valorem, together with a further preferential duty of 9d per pair and 7£ per cent, ad valorem. It is also a certainty that shipments of boots from America will decrease, as when preferential duty is added the total duty payable ranges to a basis of 40 per cent, on the value of the boots and shoes.
