POLICE COURT NEWS.

Mr. C. C. Kkttce, S.M. presided over yesterday's sitting of the Police Court. ALLEGED ASSAULT. Flunk Robertson, a Birkenhead strawberry grower, admitted .having, assaulted a boy named Percy Webb at Birkenhead on November 21. Sub-Inspector Gordon explained that the defendant had soundly boxed young Webb's ears, the lad being employed" by him as. a picker, whereas the defendant, in reply, said that Webb had spread untrue reports derogatory to his (defendant's) character. When lie heard of it he'caught hold of the boy and gave him a good shaking. His Worship said that, the defendant had evidently lost his temper when he heard of the reports having been circulated, but he should not have taken the law into his own hands. His proper course was to have discharged the boy. He would be lined 3, £2 of that amount to go to Webb. A DESERTER. Harold Edward Conway, a young sailor, admitted having deserted from H.M.s. Challenger during that warship's recent visit to Auckland. On the application of Chief-Detective Marsack, Conway was remanded for a week, and ordered to be placed on board the first war-ship entering port. ■ - MISCELLANEOUS. . Patrick Sullivan, who did not appear, was fined 10s and costs for boarding a train while in motion at Helensville, and W. Gall was lined half that amount for allowing his horn to wander in George-street, Remuera. Andrew W. McGregor was fined £2, or in default 14 days' imprisonment, on a charge of using bad language in Symonds-street.
