CITY LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The quarterly meeting of the Auckland Licensing Committee was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs. R. W. Dyer, S.M.; (chairman), ' 0. Aickin, P. E. Cheal, A. Kosser, "W. J. Rees, and. M. Casey. TRANSFERS. The following applications for transfers i were granted, the police reports in all cases being favourable:— Wm. Gibson Rae, Star Hotel, Karangahape Boad, to Alfred Adams; Timothy '38. O'Connor,, Thames Hotel, Queen-street, to Thos. J. W. Buxton; Joseph 'A. Douglas,;" Railway .Terminus Hotel, Beach Road, to Jules Vollemaere; Catherine Little, Suffolk Hotel,. College Hill, as /executrix, to herself; Thbs.'« C. Christensen, .Fitzroy Hotel, Wakefield-street, to Joe. A. Douglas. - - ''■»;■■■ POLICE REPORTS. Anchor Hotel, Queen-street: It-was reported that the barman at this hotel had been convicted for selling liquor to a drunken man, and fined £3, while the proprietor had ■been found guilty of a technical breach on the same occasion, , and was mulcted in £1 and costs. The chairman explained the circumstancos of the case, and t-aid he had' not thought it necessary to endorse the license. He emphasised that masters should keep a strict control over their servants in matters of this kind. The committee passed the matter, over. Commercial Hotel, High-street: The police reported. that the licensee had been fined £5 for unlawfully exposing liquor for , sale. Mr. Nenmegon appeared for the 1 licensee. ; The chairman related the facts and said he thought the houso should be kept under - surveillance until the committee met again in three months, when the police could report. Sub-Inspector Gordon said that, with this one exception, the house had been very conducted. ! The course suggested by the chairman was agreed upon. 1 i PACKET LICENSES. The Women's Political League forwarded h resolution requesting the- committee to. take steps to. suppress" the liquor traffic on passenger steam packets. Inspector Cullen endorsed the letter as fob lows:--' I think packet licenses should not bo issued to any of the small coastal Hteamers, and that the stewards should have no interest in the sale of liquor on board,' or.. participate in the profits arising therefrom in any way." . The opinion was expressed that the small coastal boats should not be allowed licenses but teat the terms of the resolution should . apply to -all steam passenger packets was ■considered too tar-reaching. Consideration 5 was deferred, It being thought that the new jacket: License Act would have tome bearwg on the matter.'- , !
