- NEWTON. '\ .--, '. .. The monthly meeting of the Newton Schools Committee was held last evening, there being present: Messrs. 0. H. Sexton (chair- , man), J., M. While, G. E. Read, K. Schofiold, Warrington, E. Healey, and Holdsworth. . It was agreed to send a letter of condolence to Mr. Metgo, headmaster of the Newton East school, who has lately had a bereavement in his family. Reports: The report from the Newton i .East committee ~ showed a. roll vnumjber of 875 and an average attendance of 768 for the mouth. The Newton West report showed 763 on tho roll and an. average attendance of 694-. The side school at Richmond showed a roll number of .88. The reports wars regarded as very satisfactory. Inspector Goodwin's report on the Newton West school was presented, and also considered as ! very satisfactory, and a resolution was passed thanking the headmaster {Mr. Weber) and his staff, for tho good service which they had rendered during tho year. Ponsonby Reservoir': On the motion of Mr. Read it was resolved - that a deputation, consisting of Messrs. Bchofield, Heafcy, and the mover, should wait upon the City Council and urge tho desirableness of the reservoir at Ponsonby Road being used as a swimming bath. Accounts: Accounts amounting to £29 l9s -id were passed for payment.

PARNELL. . A meeting of the Parnell School Committee was heid on Monday evening, when a memorandum from the Auckland Headmasters' Association to, school committees with suggestions in reference to holding ex* aminations in Standard VL annually in Decomber.was read,. and it was agreed that the chairman and treasurer should draft a letter in support of it. The headmaster (Mr. I. L. Scott) reported that sickness among the pupils, which bad so long affected the attendance, was diminishing, as the averago attendance for the past month was 521, out of & roll of 586. • A number of new books had been added to the school library, the addition being much appreciated. -It was moved by Mr.' D. H. Sisson, seconded by the chairman, and carried unanimously, "That the thanks of this committee be given to the Parnell Borough Council for the stand taken in connection with the reestablis'huicnt of the fish-curing business inParnell, and that the district health' officer be communicated with on the subject in the interest of the health of the children attending this school." Tho date of the annual sc.iool picnic to Motutapu was fixed for December 14. Accounts amounting to £19 12s 4d were passed for payment. I
