'; ■ '.".':■-' BOMBAY. • t -.- A MEETING was held- in the library on Monday night, to endeavour to resuscitate the [' old cricket < club. Mr. •W- K. Cornthwaite presided. A letter was received from tlie secretary or the Tuakau Cricket Club, asking Bombay to join with Tuakau, Pokeno, and Mercer, in forming a union. It was decided to accede to. Tuakau's request, and the following committee was elected: — Messrs. Alf. Evans. J. E. Evans, G- Proiide, J. Lee, A. Harris, 11. Sawyer. P. Sawyer, A. Cornthwaite, and W. 11. Watson. Mr. A. Evans was elected captain, Mr. G. Proude vice-captain, and Mr. J. E. "Evans secretary and treasurer. It was decided to commence practice on Saturday next, in Mr. Proude'a paddock. Our enterprising young 'bus proprietor has made preparations to cater, well' for the summer months. Be lias just received a new open brake to seat close upon 30 passengers, from the factory of Messrs. Cooper and Curd, of Pukekohe, which is a credit to both builders and owner. The rain we have just experienced will do a wonderful lot of good. - The late crops were in much need of moisture, and tne ploughing for turnips was also at a.standstill, the ground being too hard. There will probably be a" shortage in the.fruit crops, especially in plums and peaches, there being too much wet when the trees were in bloom. Apples are setting-better. ■ . ■ • ~ WAIWERA." THE farmers have been busy shearing during the last fortnight, and some good clips'-have, been made. ~."-. • ' The King's Birthday passed off very quietly here, as owing to the easterly weather prevailing, there was no'; excursion. from ' Auckland. ' "' • A dance was held at Upper Waiwcra on the Bth inst., the proceeds of Which are to go to-, wards the erection of a miniature rifle range. There wero a good many present, and a pleasant evening was spent. ' ;;, EAST TAMAKT. : -' RESIDENTS have not seen the Union Jack Hying from the ■flagstaff erected' by them at the'district, school for some timo, owing to the halyards being broken. On Friday afternoon Master . E.»E. Frost ascended the flag- • staff, cleared the. roller, and shipped, new flexible* steel wire halyards which .the commissioner, for the school has obtained, and on; the King's Birthday .the teacher hoisted the flag. , ' . -~. ; Our cricket club had arranged a match with a team representing Smith and Gaughey, but the latter failed to pat in an-.appearance. The club members present held> an enjoyable practice, all joining in .the game. . ; ; Refreshing, rain fell on Sunday night. which will greatly benefit late sowings and ■ the pastures. ' '~, .. , CAMBRIDGE. • THE Cambridge High School Committee met on Monday evening. -Mr.-J. Lundon presided. A committee was set up to wait on the.Borough Council in. reference to getting 'a site' for the proposed manual and technicaltraining school. The chairman remarked that •now mat a sum had been placed on the Estimates, the matter of tho oration of the manual and technical school should soon be advanced a stage. 'the headmaster's report for the month of October, was read, snowline the average attendance for the primary department as 152 out of a total roll number of 189; the secondary department's average being 37. A plot of ground had been laid N out for kitchen gardens, worked by tho boys, who displayed great interest. in- the . work, and a large plot had been retained for experimental purposes, j.' It was decided that funds be raised and prizes distributed on the breaking-up day, which is tc-take the form, of a " school at home.' The headmaster . reported 5 " that an ; excellent shortdistance range was available at the back of the school. This was. he considered, preferable to a miniature rifle range. The chairman reported that, the credit balance was £42 9a 9d. In regard to a circular from the Headmasters' Association, the- committee decided to support a uniform school year, the holding of Standard VI. examinations annually in December. , ' ,
