BOXING.
The Now Zealand amateur boxing chumpitmships have again been iU'cided."~viu this occasion in Auckland, tinder the auspices of the Northern Boxing Association. With the exception of a few hitches, which appear to be in separable from most boxing gatherings, the meeting was carried our fairly well. The non-appearance of Lewi-, oi Auckland, who recently won the, middle ami heavy-weight championships of Auckland. came as a disappointment to a great many who expected Auckland to retain the mid-dle-weight event, and if Lewis had been able to appear and hi I think lie would have won. As it was, four of the championships were annexed by the Southerners, who generally were too clever for the local men. Two good nights' sport were witnessed, and in some instances the contests were especially good. With the /displays given and tins lessons undoubtedly taught," then- should be an improvement shown at no distant date in local boxing. In the bantam-weight much was expected from the local iud, Montague, who had shown himself to be possessed of a goad deal of ring craft against other local opponent.. Tracey, of Wellington, however, ivitli a little "advantage in height and reach, awaited his opportunity, and when only half a round had gene found Montague's vulnerable point, and the latter was counted out. It was a disappointing' end to what was expected to be a good contest. Tin- heat; in the feather-weights were we'd contested, but when the final was reached Tresize. the Canterbury man. under medical advice, could not appear, anil • Saunderson, the local man, won the only championship for Auckland by default, ft was unfortunate time resize could not appear, as I have, no doubt the contest would have lx-en close and exciting. ..The lightweight division provided some good contests. The final fell to be decided between A. J. Blewden, of Auckland, and R. Mayze, of Canterbury. A great deal of interest was centred in this contest, for at the time Blewden was sent Home to compote in the English championships, where he suffered defeat, a controversy wont on as to his claims. Blewden, in 'the final, soon started his forcing and hard-hitting tactics, but his opponent outgoaeralled him in the end by superior ring craft and knowledge, and dealt out most punishment. It. was pretty (lose at the end of the third round, but when the fourth round was concluded Mayze was the winner. C. McCarty. of Wellington, who shaped well against the winner in the heat, will probably remain in Auckland. He will be a decided acquisition. In the middle-weights .1. Gilmour,, of South Canterbury, came out the winner, after a hard and exciting tussle in the final with .1. McDcrmott. of Invercargill. The heavyweights provided pretty good contests.- J. McDonnell, of Auckland, who held the Aus; tralasian championship (having won the final by default .in Sydney), was defeated in the. beat by 11. Sandow, of Wellington, who proved himself the better man/on the evening. McDonnell is getting rather old. and he did not show anything near smart ring work. His opponent would jump in and out at him, and he was too slow to follow him up. In the final J. Lloyd, of Canterbury, and Sa.ndow met. The former proved the winner. lie was content to play a waiting game with his dancing opponent, who proved himself very nimble on his feet, but the Canterburyite followed up almost, every advantage. Occasionally both gave and took a lot of .hard punishment, but Lloyd's victory proved a popular one.
