CHILDREN'S HOME SALE OF WORK.
Asale of work was opened in the Wesley Hall, Pitt-street, yesterday afternoon, in aid of tho funds of the Children's Home, Rcmuera. Mr. A. C. Caughey, who declared the function open, said that, the home was being carried on in a quiet., unobtrusive manner. It was an institution chat was deserving of support. Last year admission to the home was sought by 15'J children, but they could hot. be taken in, owing to tho insufficient accommodation. There were 62 children in the institution at present, and the cost of maintenance was £10 per head per year. It was most economically worked.
Mi. H. M. Smeeton. who presided, said that the work of the home had grown, and he. hoped that the present appeal for funds would meet with the same gratifying response as previous appeals. The hall itself presents a particularly striking appearance. It, has been gaily decorated, branches of various blossoming fruit trees having been used with good effect. The stalls have been attractively arranged, and there is not the " cramping " of goods to hi' seen which is a feature of many similar functions. There is an exceptionally fine display of woollen and linen goods and fancy articles. There is also a good array of pot plants, while a lollie ami refreshment stall is also in evidence. During the evenings competitions will be held. The following ladies are assisting in the sale of goods:Mesdames Batchelor, Pilkineton, Giles, Dixon, Speed. Smethurst, Howie, .'Jones. Dudley. Morton, Mclnnes, Adams, mid Teeco, and Misses Rountreo (2), Pearson (2), Morten (2:. Mclnnes. Henderson, Brown. Mitchell, Hurfitt, Adams, Simpson, and V. Raj. Praise is due *o Mrs. L', M. Hay, honorary secretary, for the- manner in which the general arrangements have been carriisd out.
Last evening the hall was crowded, and very good business resulted. The salf will he continued to-day and to-morrow.
