POLICE COURT NEWS.

ALLEGED THEFT. At the Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. 0. C. Kettle, S.M., Henry A.spden was charged with stealing a watch, chain, and pendant, valued at about £15, the property of Graham Morton. / Sergeant Hendry prosecuted, and Mr. J. It. Lundon i defended. ! Graham Morton said he was a stranger |to Auckland. He met accused at the British Hotel. They then went to Newj market in a tramcar. Upon alighting from the car he missed his watch and . chain. He went for a constable, and the three then adjourned to the railway station, where accused admitted that lie had the watch. Witness said they had visited 1 many hotels during the afternoon, and he had only a faint recollection of what happened. Accused said he was introduced to complainant on Friday. He took the watch to take care of it at the complainant's request. ■ He had no intention of stealing it. After hearing the Evidence Mr. Kettle said he was inclined to believe what accused said, and the case would therefore be dismissed. •• ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. Four teamen, named Thomas Leatherbarrow,. George Orme, Michael McGannse, and Herbert Crawford, were charged with being absent without" leave from the-ship Drayton Grange. ' They were each convicted . and ordered to forfeit one day's wages. . The men would also be - sent to Wellington, where they could be placed on the ship again. MISCELLANEOUS. For using threatening behaviour Cecil Ferguson and Walter Collins were each fined 10s, and Patrick McGlashan, similarly charged, was fined 20s. , For drunkenness Michael Kiley, a third offender, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment and a prohibition order issued against f' ; him; Charles ]'Jones, a second offender, was fined 10s and costs; and two first offenders were each fined 5s and costs. ; Walter Edward Jeffries was charged with assaulting William Ilibbs by striking him. After hearing the evidence Mr. Kettle dismissed the case.
