FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Business on the local fruit and produce markets has been rather quiet during the past week, and supplies generally were fully up to present requirements. Heavy, supplies of potatoes still continue to arrive from Tasmania and Sydney, with the result that nc profit has practically been made by importers. As for locally-grown, a small quantity is still in the hands of the growers, but owing to the superior quality of Tasmaniau and the present low rates ruling for the latter they were practically unsalable. Moderate quantities of seed varieties were offered, but. there wero no buyers. Onions were in fairly heavy supply from different local growers," all of which have been held too long, and, requiring immediate and forced sales, bad to be quitted at very low prices to prevent a. total loss. The prices realised were lower than could have been obtained a. month ago. For all inland and shipping orders it has been necessary to import from Victoria owing to their betterkeeping qualities. Green vegetables were in fair supply and realised good prices, whilst pumpkins were hardly salable.- Horse carrots showed a considerable improvement, and were in demand at higher rates, as did also first-class local and imported chaff, whilst there was no change in grain, m dairy produce there was about the ordinary supply of farmers' butter and fresh eggs, both oi which sold under keen competition. The market for butter generally is firm and prices are higher than was expected when the j winterseasbn opened. There was plenty of cheese i offered, but sales were difficult to effect at the very high prices asked. Bacon and hams were dull of sale, and' the quantity offered is beyond immediate requirements. The fruit market was well supplied, including heavy shipments of citrus varieties from Sydney, and prices showed a marked improvement on former values. Although . Island oranges were scarce, their place was taken by the Sydney shipments, all of which were in good order." Mandarins from Sydney came to baud in good condition and sold satisfactorily. The banana market was left rather bare owing to the Manapouri only bringing a small consignment trom Fiji on Monday, and these, being iu very good condition, were immediately quilted at high prices. In apples shipments from Tasmania on Monday were landed in very fine order, but being very, much below

the quantity expected prices firmed considerably. One special shipment sent by one grower direct realised lis per ease, whilst ordinary lots from dealers brought up to Bs. Port Albert apples were sent in in lens quantities than during the past- few weeks, and, prices were higher. Local lemons, Poor Man's orange*, and email and inferior St. Michael's from Whaugarei came to hand. The latter, however, only realised a little over the cost of freight and carriage. Poultry were penned in fair numbers and were generally of good quality, values being nigher.
