[FROM OWE, OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] CAMBRIDGE. A MOST successful and well-attended social. -muter the auspices of the Waikato Farmers' Club, was given on Wednesday evening last. Mr. Martin Butler (president) made a. few remarks, in which he emphasised the importance of the most important body of men in the country—the farmers— being thoroughly organised, not to do injustice to anyone, hut to conserve their legitimate interests. He outlined a moat interesting programme for the monthly meetings of the club. -Mr. Norman Mucky, one of the young members of the. club, stave a five-minute address, in which he.dwelt forcibly upon the necessity of the voting farmers in the district joining: the club and taking an active interest in its affairs. He said that the trend of modern legislation was to increase the taxation upon land, and it was for the farmers to combat the tendency by showing a united front, and thus repel their arch enemy—the labour unions. The arming of the future would be conducted on scientific lines, and farmers must keep abreast with the. times. Mr J. S- Fisher, another of the young members, also .cave a five-minute address, urging on the part of young farmers greater interest in the club's affairs, as the young Farmers now would have to fill the places as the older farmers dropped out. Cards, music, social intercourse, and dancing were the chief form* of .enjoyment. The Cambridge Orchestral Society (Mr H. \V. Gibus) -played a number of selections, which were much appreciate-'.!. The other musical items were:-Solo. Madame Isherwood ; vocal duet. Madame Isherwood ami Miss Watt; solo. "Bel's of Hold." Madame isherwood; pianoforte solo, the Misses Fisher: solo. Mr. T. Atkinson. The Hamilton Fanners' Club was officially represented, bv Mr. Allen Bell ('president), and Mr. J. A. Voting. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs. W. N. Sturges (Kainaki). and Mr. R. N. Buttle (Konu). An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. A meeting of the High School Committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Mr. .1. I.tmdon (chairman), presided Mr. a. George, director of technical education. wrote asking for information as to the class of instruction that would be imparted in the proposed technical school, lie was unable at present to send a copy of the elan of. the lmildinsr. In response to a circular letter re Bible reading in schools, the committee resolved, by a- majority, not to support the movement. The headmaster reported that the roll number of the primary department wag 208, the attendance- for the month, so far beinc 175, or 50 below the average for the correspoHdiiiK . period last year It was agreed to act upon several sustaestions contained in the headmaster's report. The headmaster was congratulated on the success obtained by the school at the recent pupil-teachers' examinations. The chairman was authorised to make inquiries re the miniature rifle ranges, and report to next meeting. Messrs. W. ('. Davis and Co. conducted a land sale at Cambridge, on Wednesday. Out of about a dozen properties offered only two were disposed of, viz. Section No. 68. one acre, to J. La Trohe: three acres (Cambridge West), £53, to 1?. Morse. WAIWFRA. A MOVE is afoot to start a butter factory in the district, ami a ineetiue: of the farmers takes place in the school next Saturday even ins. Some of the local farmers are tit present busy bushfellins preparatory to enlarging their ureas of grassAn effort is being made to net a regular launch service on the river between Wasvera and Upper went. A petition is being largely signed thronzhcut this and surrounding districts, asking tho postal authorities to re-instate the thriceweekly mail coach service between Devonpert, and Warkwcrth. The irregular service at present, carried en by the steamer is not at all satisfactory to the majority of the residents.
