DO CLERGYMEN GAMBLE?
BISHOP'S WARNING AGAINST THE
RACECOURSE. The Bishop of Hereford, in his triennial charge at Hereford Cathedral, asked why it was that the ministers of their Nonconformist neighbours were, as a.' rule, so much more keen and active than the majority of the country clergy in the cause of temperance. The clergy in one deanery replied that, they were against a temperance conference,-because temperance meetings did more harm than good. It was a singular view to be held by a body of clergy in a district, in which a great deal of drunkenness prevailed. He lamented that the younger clergy were not as much as they ought to be a visiting and pastoral clergy, but were too easily satisfied and occupied by athletic sports, and other .social amusements, which should be subordinated to their duty and calling. Such things as gambling at bridge, or attendance at race meetings were quite out of keeping with a clergyman's profession. Their personal duty was obviously, both by precept and example, to controvert that craving for excitement, amusement, and indulgence so prevalent.
