A SPECIAL meeting of the Kemuora Road| Board was held yesterday for the purpose! of striking the annual general and recurring rates. There were present: Messrs. S. J. Dickson (chairman), C A. Cawkwell, and J. Dempsey. It was the intention of the Board to reduce the general rate this year, but, owing to the baa state of their finances, it was resolved to adhere to the amount, struck last vear. Owing to the necessity of opening up roads that had long since been dedicates but not formed, tarring ana sanding, and a ..general clean-up of the district, a heavy 'overdraft was incurred, ana a was lounu impracticable to reduce the general rate, as intended. It might be mentioned, howevei, that the previous Board went out when a heavy overdraft existed. , The general rate was struck at,l(l in the £, ana the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board rate at one-sixth of a penny in the
Lowering Gas Mains: The Auckland Gas Company forwarded a letter, the purport ol which was that the Board should bear the coat of lowering the gas mains when occasioned by the work of the Board in altering street levels. Mr. Cawkwell oojected toils execution, holding that the Road Board had no power to fix levels, and that trie agreement, if executed, would be binding lor all time, and a considerable burden of the expense would fall on tlie ratepayers, whereas the Board had no legal liability. On the chairman's motion the matter was referred to the Board's solicitor (Mr. 1. hotter) to report at- the next meeting of the Board. •
NORTH SHORE METHODIST CIRCUIT. | The quarterly meeting of the North Shore Methodist Circuit, took place at Devonport schoolroom on Wednesday evening, and was well attended, except that 'iakapuna was unrepresented. The Rev. S. Griffith presided. Mr. W. Johnston, who was appointed at the last meeting as circuit steward, with Mr. j. P. Buddie, took his seat lor the first time, and was cordially welcomed. The quarterly return of membership showed an increase of six. and the financial statements was satisfactory. The annual collections for foreign missions were arranged for. and will tie taken up on Sunday. 28th in connectioni with the visit of the Rev. R M. Laverty, the deputation from Australia, who will a so lecture on behalf of the fund on the 25th mat. It was arranged to take up retiring collections at an early date on behalf.o.the New Zealand Alliance. Mr. J. B. licet was received as an accredited local preacher. A resolution conveying sympathetic greetings to Mr. P. H. Mason, absent through the infirmities of age. was adopted The next meeting is to bo held at fcunnyside on October 2. .
