1 Wellington, Monday. 'the Address-in-Reply in the Legislative Council will be moved by the Hon. J. T. Paul (Dunedin), and seconded by the Hon. Captain Tucker (Gisborne), both of whom were included in the last batch of appointments to the Upper Chamber. Mr. Paul, who is a Labour representative, is believed to be the youngest member to have held a seat in the Council.
The Ministers have been sitting in Cabinet to-day and this evening, discussing matters connected with the policy Bills and other matters connected with the business of the session. The Address-in-Reply debate will be opened to-morrow night, and as soon as this is disposed of the Land Bill may be looked for. The setting up of the sessional committees, which invariably leads to some discussion, will be deferred until after the debate on the Address-in-Keply is completed. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The lions. J. Rigg and J. E. Jenkinson, whose term of office as Legislative Councillors recently expired, have been reappointed by Cabinet for a further term of seven years. The vacancies created by the recent deaths of the Hons. W. Bolt and L. Walker still remain unfilled. Messrs. Rigg and Jenkinson are both Wellington members. REDISTRIBUTION OF PORTFOLIOS. The permanent redistribution of portfolios in connection with the leave-of-ab-sence granted to the Hon. W. Hall-Jones has not yet been made, but it is expected that the matter will be settled during the present week. As Mr. Hall-Jones' portfolios include the important ones of Railways and Public Works some interest will attach to the arrangenments to be made by Ministers. A GOVERNMENI CAUCUS. A caucus of the Government- party will be held on Wednesday, by which time it is expected that all the members will be present. It is stated that- the Premier will make announcements regarding the Land Hill, native land affairs, the proposed tariff revision, and other matters. THE. TARIFF. In connection with the proposed revision of the tariff a deputation from the Christchurch Bootmakers' Union, introduced by MV. Tanner, waited upon the Minister for Customs this afternoon, for the purpose of pointing out the serious effect which the competition of imported goods is having on the New Zealand boot trade. The Minis- , ter slated that the representations would , receive due consideration. The proceedings were not open to the press.
