The various squadrons of the Second Regiment Auckland Mounted Rifles will go into camp at Raglan on the 22nd inst. Lieutenant S. A. Grant, adjutant to the First Infantry Battalion (the Countess: of Ranfurly's Own), has been promoted to the rank of captain. ■■:.

Those attending will ' also receive preference for 'selection for service in India and England, it having been decided to send i two officers from the North Island and two from the South for the ; purpose of ■■ '. receiving instruction : . in those countries. The class, which will last seven or ten days, will be conducted by special instructors from headquarters.' ■■■■ ■■■'.: . ■ ''' ■■ f ■.: ■■■■■ , The members of the "A" Battery, under Captain Bosworth, held their annual trek camp at otahuhu, and:" in its immediate vicinity on Saturday, Sunday, and ■ Monday. There was a splendid ;.. attendance. The various sections were exercised in their respective branches, and one and all displayed plenty of enthusiasm. ? Some /valuable experience was gained. No firing was done; as it was thought this might alarm the residents. The nights being very cold it: was deemed inadvisable to have the men under canvas, and they put up. at the Public Hall. The men, who enjoyed - their outing immensely, returned : to town on .Monday afternoon. The Battery proposes to hold another;': trek camp" in November next if conditions are favourable..
The Franklin Mounted Rifles' annual ball,- held at Olevedon• ■ on' ' Friday •? last, proved very successful. A strong committee consisting of' the officers and noncommissioned, officers, under Captain'•'slcKenzie, was responsible for the arrangements, and a, word of praise is : due to Q.M. Sergeant Buttimore, secretary,, who worked, so well as the committee's, executive officer in carrying out the details, the Public Hall at Clevendon was taxed to its utmost, some 50 couples being present. Festivities were kept up till nearly four a.m. Meredith's orchestra? provided the music. The altering was'in the hands of. Sergeant G. Atkins, the well-known regimental cook. , During the 7 evening Major J. G. Wynyard presented a number 01 snooting prizes won by members of the souadron at the Regimental Rifle Meeting, and also the Kirker cup and medals won by the. members of the team. ; He referred to the splendid success of "D" Squadron n shooting, as evidenced by the number of trophies and cash prizes he had to present.
