THE WINNING COMPETITORS.

" ' DuNEDiXi' Tuesday. The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Winter Show was opened this afternoon by the Hon. J.- A.'' Millar in the Agricultural Hall, when there "was ; a good attendance -of the public. Good" entries were received in nearly all classes, : and the quality of the exhibits is well up 'to the excellent standard set in former years. .Judging, with the exception of "cattle and sheep, was completed. - As usual, great interest was taken in .the cheese competitions,' the quality of the exhibits' calling forth most favourable ■ comment from the judges, who included the Dairy Commissioner. There was keen competition ■in the section, in ■which the society donated special -prises' in conjunction with shipping companies and other supporters.'-. An ex-cellent-display of agricultural produce was on view/this season's wheat being exceptionally fine, most of the entries coming from North and Central Otago.\ : The show j of roots was considered to be the best ever seen at a local show, and very numerous entries were received both-in this class and in the cookery section. Fruit was. confined to apples, which were a feature, the exhibits being varied and particularly clean. The familiar county bays of former years', which always proved an attraction, were absent at to-day's show, the shield having been won outright by Taieri last year and the prizes offered for farmers' "bays on a smaller scale attracted no entries. : The cattle and sheep will be judged to-morrow.

In the factory class the prize for best three boxes of butter suitable for export was won by the Canterbury Dairy Company (Belfast) with 93' points, South Canterbury Company (Timaru) being second with 92 - and 91£ points. For the best two boxes of butter suitable for export the Norsewood Factory was first with 92 points, Pihama (Taranaki) second with 90, and Thames Valley third with 89*. . ' - : ; v

In the cheese section the prize for the best scwt of full cream (coloured) cheese suitable for export was won by Mataura with 95i points; Edendale was second with 97, and Waikouaiti third with 94£. For the best sowt of full cream (white) cheese Edendale led with 94 points; Waikouaiti came second with' 93, and: Mataura third with 92£.' In factory-mad© cheeses suitable for export, white or':' co'oured, Mataura was first with 94 points, and Edendale second with 93.
