Mr. Pasisc, a Bendigo gold buyer, brought tho gold to the Mint alter the main i building bad closed, and the constable in charge of the police at the Mint lodged it in the Mint safe, to which there are only two keys, the constable holding one and the master of the Mint the other. He lock**' tho safe. When it was discovered that the bars were missing, the sate ww opened in the usual way and there were no signs of tampering with the lock. The constable kept the key in his pocket. Between the time of placing the gold in. the safe and the discovery the police guards were changed thrice. Inquiries are being made. The supposition is that by some means the key had been abstracted and replaced in IN constable's pocket.
