' A peculiar incident occurred to-day to the North express just before its arrival at the - crossing between Brindwyr and Papanui, when the train .was stopped by a woman, who had observed a gap of 6in or Bin in one of the rails, a piece having been broken off. , •■'''■*'*>] The train was run slowly over the gap',! but-had it been travelling at fults'pSed w a*| appalling accident might have occurred.;! No explanation is given as to how the rail was broken. The piece of metal removed is missing. Several trains passed before the express, but nothing amiss was observed, and the line inspector and ganger noticed no gap in the morning.
