SPORTING NOTES.
[by phaeton.] One of the surprises in the .totalizator ■ business transacted ! at'Ellerslie on Saturday last- was tho sum invested oa the Ladies' Bracelet, which event, it may be. added, formed ■■ tho> concluding event "of tho pro--1 gramme. Had anyone ventured tho opinion 1 prior to backers gottimr to work ■ that the race in question would carry a "sum in i advance of that invested on the Cornwall i Handicap, and within £83 10s of. that put ( through in connection with the Great Northern Hurdle Race, ho would have been • simply laughed at. Though there was m\s a field of seven for the bracelet race, tho totalisator bells were rung so merrily that no less a sum than £2367 was invested. Mr. James Muir advertised the chance of Rauparaha 40 strongly that the half-brother to * Waipuna" was always a good favourite, and his popular owner had the satisfaction of seeing him capture the leading position. Rauparaha wasri the nomination of Mrs. Muir, and the beautiful bracelet, valued at 75sovs, it need hardly be said, will be highly prized, as Rauparaha, the successful horse, I was privately bred at Ngaruawahia by Mr. Muir. ."', :' ' - v ■ -.. . : \ It might have been expected that Yolette was more "■' likely to iulfil her engagement at Ellerslio on Saturday last in the | Maiden Hurdle Race than tho Great I Northern Hurdle Race. With a courage i that was not a little surprising, the owner I of the Fabulous mare withdrew her from! the smaU race and started her for the big! event. Yolette ran a decent race, but she) never really had a chance of earning distinction.. ~. •: ; The Auckland-bred Putty managed to ■ strike winning form at Randwick on Monday last, when he won tho Prince of Wales'
brakes (one mil© and three furlongs) in hollow style. As tho St. Lcgcr gelding carried Bst 21b, and practically caino in by.himself, there is strong evidence that fie has recovered his best term. Putty started at * to 1, and this fact points to his having been made the medium of solid support. \- Now that Kiatere has won such '*. high honours, Mr. Darragh may be encouraged to nominate his horse for the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase, entries for which close this month. The fact that the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase has this season added money to the extent of 1000 sovereigns may, however, play its part in causing Mr. 'Darragh to keep Kiafcere in Maoriland. ! In tho pictorial supplement of the current | number .of the Auckland- Weekly News the stiff battle fought out between Mcrriwai (J. O'Comiell) and Irish (W. Young) at the last fence in the Great Northern HurdleRace is reproduced.* Now and again.it'can be contended legitimately that the camera can lie, but in this case the operator "snapped " a picture that can be adjudged absolutely true.
lii tho Wellington Steeplechase of 1905, Kiatere (list 121b) and Waitarero (lOst 41b) fought, out tho finish, and victory rested with Kiatere. At Ellerslic, on Monday last, Kiatero (12st 131b) and Waitarere (lOst 41b) met to fiVht their battle o'er again, and fho result was such as to demonstrate that Kiatere is even a : better horse than when ho led his brown rival homo at the Hutfc in the winter two .years back. ■Tho same tale has to be recorded with regard to Rambler's efforts under silk. 'The son of Hotchkiss contested the Maiden Welter at Ellerslic on Saturday, but the old aibnent of bleeding from tho nose again making its appearance ho' was pulled up. It is to bo regretted that Rambler should bo persevered with -as -a: racer when the weakness from which he suffers is so clearly established. f ' -v."! ,-.-':■ • . " Messrs. Of £2450 10s invested on the event iit question, only iA was opposite Nor'-west's name. : At the sale of the Branjip stud in Victoria last week, the bidding for the imported sire Friar . Tuok reached 1250 guineas, but, as,the sum offered did not reach the reserve, the English horse was passed in. ; 'i , Kiatere has the record of having won both the Great Northern Steeplechase and Wellington Steeplechase on two occasions. " Thalaba, an imported -filly by Greyleg, won a double in Now South Wales recently. The 127 th Derby is set down for decision at- Epsom to-day. ■'■•■' »'-■■-■-...- —————. • , -'*-. . THE GREAT NORTHERN MEETING. ;. It has been decided to alter the order of running the events of Saturday's programme. INTERPROVINCIAL GOSSIP. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN COBHESPONDENrS.] , : CANTERBURY. ; • .• Tuesday." The statement placed before the members of the Canterbury Jockey Club at the annual meeting l as week was a,highly satisfactory one. It was, in fact, the statement of a record year, a profit of about £6000 resulting from the : season's operations. This result, as the chairman mentioned, was extraordinary, the Exhibition having - attracted large crowds of strangers, who would not otherwise have visited Christchurch. At the same time, though not anticipating a repetition of the past season's success, the committee is evidently prepared to find tho coming year a prosperous one, as 'we ar<; promised • further increases in stakes. : Another matter that is to be dealt".with shortly is the erection of further stand accommodation for the use of members. During the last day or two v the weather, which had been very;: wet, v cleared up, and trainers arc'once more in possession of plenty of good ground on which to work their charges for their winter engagements. Magical, who won a \ hurdle race at the Duuediii meeting, is a full brother to Slow Tom, and a half-brother to Ability. Hitherto.he has never shown any form . to suggest that he was ever likely'to distinguish himself, even in such moderate company us was opposed to him. Cross Battery has<been nominated, for ill the leading spring handicaps in Australia. I do, not know that thero is any serious intention of journeying to the I Commonwealth, but his owner probably I thinks: that it' is -money' well ! spent to enter | iim in view of possibilities. > ~ j
