Mr. Richard Hobbs, of Ponsonby, who has been on a visit to Australia, returned by the Victoria from Sydney yesterday. Madame Wielaert has returned to Auckland after a short holiday trip, and she has quite recovered from a recen attack of laryngitis. News has been received at Auckland of the sudden death in Jamaica of Mr. John Wilson, a former employee of the Auckland Electric Tramways Company. Mr. J. Milward, superintendent of the Pacific Cable Company, arrived from Sydney by the Victoria last evening, and leaves by the cable steamer Iris to-morrow on a visit of inspection of the cable stations. Mr. M. A. Smales, of the Pacific Cable Company's service, who has been stationed at Southport, Queensland, arrived from Sydney by. the Victoria last evening on a visit to his relatives at the East Tamaki. Mr. Smales is on a three-months' holiday vacation. .■-..''■■; '■■•''■ , "''-•'• ■';•.. At a meeting of the Auckland Ministers' Association a letter was received from the Rev. J.' B. Russell, of Knox Church, .resigning his membership and office of hon. .treasurer, on account of leaving Auckland for Scotland. Regret was expressed by the association, and Mr. Russell's valuable help in the past was .warmly acknowledged. ■ , .- ■:'■'■' ■■ . '" Mr. J. W. J.. Preston, who has been act-ing-traffic manager in the Wellington office of the Union Company for some time past, has been promoted to the position of manager for the company at Gisborne. Mr. V. A. Eevell, acting-manager of the Gisborne branch, has been appointed manager of the Blenheim branch. Mr. E. Pearson, submanager at Lyttelton, will take up the position of acting-traffic manager at Wellington. '■--. • . ■ ./■
News lias been received of the death, at Cashmere, India, from cholera, of Mr. Nathaniel W. Werry, a well-known resident of Wellington for many years. The deceased 'was a native of England. He held the position of Under-Secretary for New Zealand railways until: the ; abolition of that office, and subsequently he became secretary of the Wellington Club. He married the r widow of the late Colonel Header, mother of . Mr. Athol Reader, whose wife has made a name for herself .in connection with i financial matters in the United States, San Domingo, and other countries. The [late".' Mr. Werry took a great interest in outdoor sports in Wellington, , having been a member of the Wellington ; Football Club; Wellington Cricket Club, Port Nicholson Yacht Club, and the Star Boating Club. *
