BOROUGH COUNCILS.

GREY LYNN. The ordinary meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: Messrs. J. Farrell (Mayor), W. Dimery, G. Sayers, W. S. Smith, A. ,' A. Creamer, and W. J. Drainage: ; A case of drains being laid in connection with private '. nouses, without a permit being applied for, engaged the attention of. the Council. ; Mr. Sayers suggested prosecuting the drainer, who had committed a breach of the by-laws. . It was resolved to obtain a report on the matter from the foreman of works. Tram Shelter-shed: , It was resolved to refer the matter of a. tram shelter-shed for tramway passengers from Surrey Orescent to the Streets Committee.,' EAR-NELL. 'The meeting of the Parnell Borough Council, . held last evening, was attended by Messrs., G. W. Basley (Mayor), C. Wood, R. B. Lusk, W. Johns, G. Thompson, G. F. Fowler, R. S. Briggs, and F. Fit*. Larrikinism: -' The Auckland Gas Company wrote inviting the Council to/join with the company in giving a reward of £2 for information leading to the conviction of persons ■ damaging - street ; lamps in the borough. It was stated that frequent damage to lamps recently necessitated proceedings being taken against offenders. On the motion of the Mayor, it was,decided to contribute half of the reward of £2. Accounts: The total/ amount of accounts presented and passed for payment was £624 18s Bd, including £488 5s 8d to the City Council for water. ■ . . '"-" Water Consumption: •: It was reported that the water consumption for the past, fortnight totalled j 1,668,000 ■gallons, 1,140,000 gallons being -passed through /the Ponsonby meters and 528,000" gallons through the Ehyber Pass meters. X'/; •;,, , ':■■•;;?'■ „ ,;";' ' Sanitation: The inspector of nuisances reported having made a house-to-house inspection through the borough, and having found the conditions generally fairly satisfactory, there . being -a; few exceptions. v..;:-., Notices, where necessary, had been served on householders, .and in most cases the requirements had been met; In regard to the collection and removal of rubbish;in the/ borough, the present contractors put : in ah ; increased price for the work—from £3 to £4 per week. The ordinary meeting of .the Newmarket Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr. F. Bennett) and Messrs. A. Seceombe, C. Leek, H. Kinder,, R. ' Holmes, E. Davis, Wm. Edgerley, D. Teed, C. F. Borgolte, and J. iMoColl. : Removal of Trees: A letter, signed by several property owners in Park Avenue, was received, asking, the Council to remove a number of trees; in the : avenue, as they caused dampness to their houses in the winter. On the motion of the* Mayor it was decided to refer the letter to "■ the Streets Committee. : Rating on Unimproved Values: Mr. Leek gave notice of motion that he - would move at the next meeting of the Council, "That the question of rating on unimproved land be discussed by the Council with a view to getting more: revenue *to improve the roads and "pathways :in the borough." In speaking in* support of his proposition Mr. Leek said he had found that there were a large number iof r property owners :in the borough who ' did.not pay a-quarter of the rates they! should do. They would not build nor even selLtheir, r prpperty, thua;ohecking,tbe pxQgress of the borough. After sonic discussion, it was decided to .refer . the matter to a spepial .committee to report upon at a. future meeting of the Council. ; Infectious Diseases:' Two oases of measles were reported to have taken place in the borough during the past 14 days. •/• ONEHUNGA. The fortnightly,meeting of- the 1 Onehunga Borough Council was .held last/ evening, when there were present: Messrs. John Rowe (Mayor), J. Glanfield, N. A. Whyte, G. Moody, sen., A. S. Holmes', W. /Morton, sen., J. Stoupe,-S. R, Skinner,; T. Pardington, and Wm. Colledge,'sen.-, ; Finance: The. town? clerk "i : announced the general fund to be £52 15s in credit, and the cemetery fund £414 18s 5d to the good. Water Consumption: The ; turncock reported having' pumped 1,856,000 gallons of water during the past- fortnight. ~ /;/ ■;.."? Club • Room: It was resolved •to •; inform the Manukau Yacht Club that the/section applied for at Geddes' Basin '.'■ had already been leased, but that /the Council would lease a section in Water-street at a nominal figure. .- ','•••..'- '.'..."•''", ■ - Supply of Scoria: McCarten Bros, wrote "offering to purchase scoria from the Mount , Smart pit at 3d ! per load. -; The matter was referred to the Council in ; committee. V. ; Ambulance Class:': Permission was 7 granted to the Onehunga branch of St. John Ambulance Society to use the spare room in the Municipal Buildings .during the ensuing course of lectures. - Road Metal: It was resolved that the supply of road metal for the season be obtained from E.Pascoe and Co. Tenders for epawls from ;J. Dore at 3s 6d per yard in Victoria-street and 2s near; Council Chamber, were not accepted. ■/; , / .•-,. ' Waterworks: Mr. Stoupe, chairman ol the Waterworks'. Committee, requested; that a/note be made of all works and extensions passed and not yet carried but, so that he might attend to them. . Accounts': Accounts amounting to £190 4{ Id were passed for payment." ; Loans: The Mayor moved in accordance with the notice he had given, "That steps be taken to raise loans for the extension oi the waterworks' And* for drainage" works foi the borough, and that the Finance Committee 'be instructed to arrange' all preliminaries in: connection therewith, and that they be empowered to consult the borough solicitors and Mr. Metcalfe, the engineer, ii necessary.'' This was agreed to. Footpath Formation: On the motion ol Mr. Stoupe it was decided to use all sand scraped off the main roads for the formation of footpaths in side streets,: instead of filling Arthur-street gully with it. Mr. W. Me Reynolds' application for footpath extension in , Selwyn-street ; was referred to the Streets Committee,;as, was,.. a request : foi crossings in Albert-street. ".»,'' .... Protection :of Lamps: It was decided tc fall in with: the request of the Gas Company to take united action against certain offenders \ guilty of breaking street lamps. '■• Captain Springs, Road': It was agreed to improve Captain Springs Road . when the spawls were taken out. Drainage: Mr. J. E. Davey wrote stating that he had been requested to-cement> certain drain ; pipes, and. while willing; to' do so he thought that others should; be treated in the same way. It was resolved to "leave the matter in the hands of the inspector. '.:■. Storm Water:. It was decided -that a brick trap bo placed at the cottier of Queen and Captain Streets for the purpose of carrying off storm water. • . -.;■■-. .. Cemetery Fund: The Mayor gave notice to move at next meeting, "That on and after June 30 tho';; cemetery; account. be charged £50 towards the , amount of the town clerk's salary, also £10 for office rent." Forcible Entry: The sexton reported that a monumental mason's assistant had broken off , the padlock in order to get into the cemetery. It was resolved that the borough solicitors be instructed to take action.
